Officer Trainee Deck and Engineering
This programme is designed for those who are seeking to become an officer
and progress through the ranks as junior officer, senior officer, chief mate or second
engineer to master or chief engineer officer.
The main entry route is
the Foundation Degree-based programme, which is A level entry and requires 120
UCAS points in unspecified A levels. You
will also be expected to have good grades in GCSE English, Maths, Physics/Combined Science
and one other subject. In Scotland, entry for this route is the Highers and Standard Grade
equivalents to the A level entry points and GCSEs listed.
As well as the Foundation Degree, you will gain
professional seafaring Certificates of Competency that allow you to work on board any
ship, anywhere in the world. The Foundation
Degree also provides opportunities for further personal development with progression into
the third year of an Honours Degree.
Training lasts approximately three years, and usually
consists of three college phases and two sea phases, although this
may vary according to the college and the company that sponsors you. Your sponsoring company may also require other
qualifications for entry than those indicated above.
Alternative entry routes at GCSE level are available for those who
dont meet the Foundation Degree-based programme requirements. Entry is also available on other undergraduate
programmes and for those with prior experience in engineering, or who have science,
technology or engineering-based degrees. The
shipping companies will tell you what programmes they are currently sponsoring.
